If you’re confused about the difference between progressive scan and interlacing, don’t be. The former means that all lines are displayed in sequence, whereas the latter means that lines are drawn alternately. This was done for bandwidth reasons, with interlacing resulting in additional blurring or shakiness. In some consoles interlacing is used to “skip” lines, resulting in “scanlines” that give some old games their distinctive pixellated look.

The main reason modern TVs do a bad job of displaying old video signals is that they have too many pixels to fill. The maximum number of individual pixels in a 240p image is 76,800, whereas a modern Ultra HD TV has a total of 8,294,400 pixels. That’s a 108-fold increase in pixel numbers, or nine times the number of horizontal lines.

To get around this problem, modern TVs process incoming images in an attempt to improve how they look on high-resolution panels. This is a process known as upscaling, and it can work well in video content. Unfortunately, crisp pixel art can become distorted and muddled. Buying a used CRT for a reasonable price is a lot harder than it once was. Many of the “best” CRTs are highly sought-after items, with sellers asking for hundreds of dollars (or more) on used marketplaces. Scarcity is a real problem since CRTs are no longer manufactured.

Even the worst CRTs have become trendy items that sellers will often try to shift for more money than they’re worth. If you’ve got one or can find one for a decent price, this may be a route you want to explore. Remember that not all CRTs were built equally.

Buying a used CRT is a lot like buying used vinyl. You might get pops, scratches, and warps on old records just as you might see bowed pictures, barrel distortion, and color shifts on old tube displays. Some CRTs never looked that good, whereas models like the legendary Sony PVMs stand head and shoulders above the rest.

Unlike most of the speakers we’re looking at, these are full-size, with the dual internal class D amplifiers pushing 45 watts of power per speaker into the 5-inch glass fiber composite drivers. The speakers use a pair of neodymium silk-dome tweeters for clean, airy-sounding highs.

The speakers sit inside MDF cabinets that are internally braced to prevent unwanted vibration that can interfere with the sound. While these speakers include a connection for a subwoofer, you might not need it. The Fluance Ai41 speakers have rear bass ports for enhanced low end, and they work quite well.

For connectivity, you’ve got multiple options, though you won’t find a 3.5-inch jack for a standard computer plugin. Instead, you’ll need a 3.5mm to RCA adapter to plug into the RCA inputs on the rear of the speaker. Alternately, you use the optical TOSLINK digital input to connect to your computer.

Unlike the larger Ai61 model , the Ai41 doesn’t feature USB connectivity, but they do feature Bluetooth 5. The Razer Nommo V2 also features THX spatial audio that works great in games. That said, I recommend turning it off and relying on stereo output when not gaming, because the spatial sound can distort music and video content. As for the RGB on the back, it’s bright and vivid when you’re using one of the presets, but the Ambient Awareness mode that reflects the content shown on your monitor is quite dim with tepid-looking colors. This is a disappointment considering the ambient RGB mode is one of the biggest selling points of the Nommo V2.

Regarding connectivity and controls, you’re getting volume controls on the right satellite, USB, and Bluetooth connectivity, with most extra features, including THX and RGB presets available in Ryzen Synapse. Differences to the Nommo V2 Pro include a wired subwoofer instead of a wireless one and the absence of the wireless control puck for $150. That’s more than a fair trade, especially since you can buy the control puck for $50.

When it comes to the negatives, aside from the disappointing ambiance mode and high price, the satellites are mounted on an angled base that doesn’t include any adjustments, and Razer Synapse is filled with small bugs and is generally a bloated piece of software. If you want a notably better RGB ambiance mode in games, check out the Logitech G560 . For $100 less, you’re not getting the same level of sound quality, but the G560 is well-suited for gaming audio. There’s also the famous Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 . This system doesn’t pack RGB but costs only about $120 and offers impressive sound quality for the price.

What and Where Is the Lyrid Meteor Shower?

The Lyrid meteor shower is caused by small pieces of debris falling from and trailing behind the C/1861 G1 (Thatcher) comet, which was discovered by amateur astronomer A. E. Thatcher in 1861. As the Earth passes through Thatcher’s solar orbit, the trailing debris collides with our atmosphere to create a stunning meteor display. It’s called the Lyrid meteor shower because the shoots of light appear to originate near the Lyra constellation , but in fact, the shower has nothing to do with Lyra other than this apparent positional coherence.

Our planet passes through Thatcher’s trail once a year in April. More specifically, it lasts from April 14-30, peaking on the night of April 22-23. The Lyra constellation is best viewable in Northern-Hemisphere skies, and the Lyrid meteor shower’s radiant point is far north on the sky’s dome. While you might see some meteors if you’re in Cape Town or Canberra, you’re more likely to appreciate its spectacle in Montreal, Memphis, and Manchester.

How to Watch the Lyrid Meteor Shower

To find the Lyra constellation, look for its brightest star, Vega, which is also the fifth-brightest star in the night sky. You’ll see the Lyra constellation under the right-hand wing of the much larger Cygnus constellation.

There are many stargazing apps you can use to help you locate phenomena in the sky. SkySafari is useful because you can type the name of the constellation or star you’re searching for, and it’ll help you center the object. However, don’t worry about focusing your gaze solely on Lyra for the Lyrid meteor shower—you’ll see the shooting trails of light all over the night sky.

The beauty of meteor showers is that you don’t need any special equipment to see them. What you do need, however, is patience.

The best time to see the Lyrid meteor shower is in the early hours of the peak morning, so after midnight on April 22nd. You’ll have much more of a chance of seeing the display if you have a dark sky away from city lights (use a light pollution map to help you with this) and a wide field of view.

Once you’ve located a safe spot, grab a mug of something hot, set a blanket on the ground, and simply look upwards. Be warned: blink, and you might miss one. You might even have to wait an hour before witnessing this astronomical spectacle—meteor showers are frustratingly unpredictable—but if you’re patient (and lucky), you can expect to see between 10 and 30 an hour in the right conditions. Your eyes will need to take time to adjust to the darkness, anyway, so waiting around for a while won’t do any harm.

The biggest final obstacles to shooting star success are things you can’t control. First, the moon will be in its waxing gibbous phase as the meteor shower hits its peak (the full moon is on April 24th), so you can expect some unwanted light to obscure your view of the faintest meteors. Try to plan your time between the setting of the moon and the rising of the sun (between 5 am and 6 am on April 23rd) for the darkest skies. Second, clouds—the biggest thorn in any stargazer’s side. But remember, all things being well, you’ll catch some shooting stars at some point between April 14-30 if you find the right conditions.

How to Photograph the Lyrid Meteor Shower

Just witnessing the Lyrid meteor shower should be enough to wow you, but photographing a streak of dust burning up in our atmosphere can add an extra bit of joy to this addictive hobby. The first thing you’ll need is a sturdy tripod. For the best chance to catch a shooting star, you’ll need to set your phone’s camera to a long exposure and keep it very still. You’ll also benefit from adjusting some of your phone’s settings to get the best shot of the night sky .

Going back to the earlier point about dark skies, the same applies to astrophotography. If you’re near any artificial lights, they will flood your camera lens and severely disrupt your shot.

NightCap is a great free app for capturing moving objects in the sky if you use an iPhone. Along with options for capturing the International Space Station and star trails, there’s a Meteor Mode, which automatically detects any sudden, bright movements of light in the sky and saves them in your gallery.

While similar apps are also available for Android phones, increasing the exposure time in your camera’s night mode (and, if possible, setting a five-second shutter timer or using a shutter-release cable so you don’t accidentally wobble your shot) will almost certainly do the trick if you shoot enough pics.

You should also turn down the brightness on your phone’s screen . Otherwise, your eyes will take time to adjust when you look back up at the sky. YouTube Music’s channel pages, launched in April 2023, let anyone host bonus content their followers can enjoy and download. With the new radio feature, the channel owner can share daily music playlists based on their recently played music across all of YouTube. Followers can listen to your personal radio on your channel page, as well as add the playlist to their library. Google says personal radio is “made for sharing” and gets “refreshed daily.” If you don’t have the feature yet, click this link to experience someone else’s personal radio.

Some competing platforms have had something similar, although they’re not quite the same as personal radio. Spotify’s Friends Mix and Blend features , for example, lets you create a shared playlist where you and your friends combine your music tastes by mixing your favorite songs. Although these social capabilities facilitate a form of music discovery, personal radio is restricted to songs based on your listening habits.

Your personal radio is set to private by default to protect your privacy. You can view it by visiting the channel settings by clicking your profile icon and choosing “Your Channel.” Here, you can decide whether your listening stats, such as the top tracks, artists, playlists, and music videos, will be private or public. Likewise, before others can enjoy your personal radio playlist, you must publish it. To do so, click your profile icon and choose “Settings,” select “Privacy & location,” then choose “Channel settings,” and turn on “Enable public personal radio.” Don’t forget to hit “Enable” to confirm changes.

This feature only began rolling out recently, so check back later if you don’t see it on the YouTube Music app or website. PC games have been the target of mods for almost as long as there have been PC games. I certainly fondly remember playing the Barney the Dinosaur mod for Wolfenstein 3D on my 386 laptop, but enough about my chronic back pain!

Thanks to AI, we’re seeing some truly out-there mods for games, and one of the most impressive might be one that swaps out the Baldur’s Gate 3 narrator for a voice that almost (but not quite) sounds like Sir David Attenborough. Here’s how to try it for yourself.

What You Need

Apart from owning a PC copy of Baldur’s Gate 3, you also need three pieces of software:

• The Baldur’s Gate 3 Mod Manager
• The Baldur’s Gate 3 Mod Fixer
• The Famous British Narrator mod

You’ll also need to create a free account with Nexus Mods, if you haven’t already, in order to download the last two items on the list. Before we go further, download all three of these resources. Use the “manual download” option on the Nexus pages for the mod and mod fixer. Save all three zip files to a folder. I just saved mine to the Downloads folder. Just extract the mod manager, leave the other two files as zipped files.

While it’s obvious that the “Famous British Narrator” mod is meant to sound like Sir Attenborough, the actual famous British narrator isn’t involved in any way, shape or form. This is an AI impersonation, and while this is still a gray area, there’s one future in which these types of mods may not be allowed. Since this is a free mod, and it does not name or imply endorsements from the person being impersonated, it’s at worst harmless fun, but AI voice impersonation is a hot topic of debate in the entertainment industry. I’ve written this guide mainly to illustrate this technology and this new generation of mods, not to endorse or oppose them.

Before we start, make sure that you’ve run Baldur’s Gate 3 at least once. This ensures that the right profiles and folders have been created, since the mod manager relies on this.

I ran virus scans on all the downloaded files and didn’t detect anything, but you should also scan any files you download, especially executable programs, which in this case would be the mod manager.

Step 1: Open the Mod Manager

With the mod manager file unzipped, open the folder and run BG3ModManager.exe. You should see this program window open. It looks a little complicated, but we’re going to follow a very basic process.

Step 2: Import the Mod Fixer

The mod fixer is necessary for many mods to work in the game, since it forces the game to recompile the campaign data, without which some mods would not work. To install it, Select File>Import Mod in the mod manager.

Navigate to the folder where the mod fixer’s zipped file is, select it and then select “Open.” You should see “ModFixer” listed under “Overrides.”

Step 3: Import the Narrator Mod

Now, repeat the same process in Step 2, except this time select the zipped file for the Famous British Narrator mod instead. Since this is a much larger file, importing will take longer and could be a while depending on your computer’s performance.Now both imported mods should be listed under “Overrides.”

Step 4: Export Mod Order

Next, all you have to do is select File>Export Order to Game.

You should see a green message pop up at the bottom of the window in the mod manager.

This means we’re ready to go!

Step 5: Test the Game

Everything on the modding side of the process should now be done, which means it’s time to start up the game to see if it’s working. You’ll get a warning that mods have been detected, which is a good sign! You can choose to never show this message again, but I think it’s worth the hassle of the extra click so that you know whether you’re starting up a modded version of Baldur’s Gate or not.

Once you’re in the game, you can either load up your save game and wait until you get to a section of narration, or you can quickly start a new game with a preset character, run to the first nursery in front of your pod, and check for the voice this way. As you can see in this clip.

Now you can play the game like normal with your new narrator.

Removing Mods

To reverse this process and take the game back to the way it was, right-click on the mods under “Overrides” and select “Delete Mod.”

You’ll see two check boxes. Make sure the permanent deletion box is checked if you want to remove the mod files completely. Otherwise, simply leave the box to remove the mod from the load order checked. Then confirm your choice. Finally, export the mod order to the game again.

Now the original narrator should be back, and in my testing, this did not affect my save games. However, keep in mind that certain mods may make save games impossible to use with the vanilla game! I was intimidated by 3D printers for a long time, and I didn’t know what I would actually do with one. Then, I impulsively bought a 3D printer on a whim, and I realized my fears were unwarranted. A simple, affordable 3D printer is a very useful tool to have in your home; no fancy modeling software is required.

The question of what I would do with a 3D printer if I got one was maybe even a bigger concern than how to use it. I’d seen lots of people print cool things with 3D printers, but much of it was more novelty than practical. Spending a few hundred bucks on a gadget to print plastic trinkets wasn’t appealing to me. Still, I was interested, and late one night, I clicked buy now on an Anycubic Kobra on sale for $200. Oops.

The Kobra is now discontinued, but you can buy the Anycubic Kobra 2 if you’d like to follow in my impulse purchase footsteps.

Getting Started is Not as Hard as You Think

Before I show off some of my practical home and life improvement prints, a couple of notes on the self-imposed barriers you may have in your head about 3D printing.

My particular 3D printer took about an hour to assemble, and it has a self-leveling program, which makes getting started super easy. After I was done setting it up, I popped in the included microSD card and printed the sample model. To my surprise, it came out pretty good.

Is this a perfectly smooth, immaculate print? Heck no. But did the printer successfully produce a solid figure that is clearly an owl? Yes, and that is really all you need for most things.

That little owl is a perfect example of how easy 3D printing can be. It required zero configuration, and I didn’t do a thing with the 3D model. I simply loaded in the filament and pressed “Print.”

But 3D printing isn’t just printing owls or novel little trinkets (though that’s naturally a lot of fun). It’s also really useful. You can find 3D models for all manner of useful things on big 3D model sites like Thingeverse . I’d encourage you to browse through there to see all the potential things you could solve with a 3D print.

The Game Bar is an overlay panel in Windows 10 and Windows 11 that allows you to record your screen, take screenshots, switch between games, monitor system resources, and other functionality. Microsoft is rolling out an update to the Game Bar for people in the Xbox Insiders program, adding a new “Compact Mode” interface that works better on smaller screens or when using a game controller.

Microsoft said in a blog post, “With Compact Mode enabled, access to widgets and navigation is simplified to ensure you can get access to the content you want as easily as possible. When using a controller, you can switch between widgets quickly with left and right bumpers (LB/RB).”

The Game Bar can still only be opened with the Win+G keyboard shortcut, or by searching for “Game Bar” in the Start Menu. However, most Windows handheld consoles (if not all) can map keyboard shortcuts to physical buttons. Microsoft suggests mapping a button to the Win+G shortcut if you want easy access.
